CONDEMNING THE ATTACK ON THE TURKISH EMBASSY IN SOMALIA

                                 ______

                          HON. ADAM KINZINGER

                              of illinois

                    in the house of representatives

                        Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Mr. KINZINGER of Illinois. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to express my
sincere condolences to the people and Government of Turkey.
On July 27, 2013, their embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia was attacked
by three suicide bombers. Two security guards and a Somali student lost
their lives in the explosions, while several members of the embassy
staff were also injured. An al-Qaida-linked, Somali militant group
named al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack. This serves
as a stark reminder that al-Qaida remains strong throughout the Middle
East and Africa and needs to be confronted at every turn.
Turkey has been a force for good in Somalia and is actively involved
with Somalia's reconstruction. Turkish aid workers have been assisting
Somali authorities to rebuild their war torn country by undertaking
development projects, including street renovations and the construction
of schools. Furthermore, Turkey continues to strengthen commercial
times with Somalia to help boost its economy.
Mr. Speaker, I share the Obama administration's condemnation of this
attack and express my condolences in the strongest terms possible.
