			 event of the death of a first responder in the line of duty.</official-title></form>

 <section id="H031F930B41D94F629F86F87D09BDF6B7" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Honoring Hometown Heroes Act</short-title></quote>.</text> </section><section id="HD743BC1D789445CE9CA5545C0E570040"><enum>2.</enum><header>Permitting the flag to be flown at half-staff in the event of the death of a first responder serving in the line of duty</header> <subsection id="H4846E472D8F149FDB42ABC030BF14FAC"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Amendment</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The sixth sentence of section 7(m) of title 4, United States Code, is amended—</text>
 <paragraph id="HEDC54A22A5B7415CAA6C2826085A2F8E"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking <quote>or</quote> after <quote>possession of the United States</quote> and inserting a comma;</text> </paragraph><paragraph id="HFFD5C0D1343749699DDE086642C161CB"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by inserting <quote>or the death of a first responder working in any State, territory, or possession who dies while serving in the line of duty,</quote> after <quote>while serving on active duty,</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="HC98E9240BC4048BE8C6FA0187CE6986B"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by striking <quote>and</quote> after <quote>former officials of the District of Columbia</quote> and inserting a comma; and</text> </paragraph><paragraph id="H0142D35B3E2B4206BB010E1645B576AC"><enum>(4)</enum><text>by inserting before the period the following: <quote>, and first responders working in the District of Columbia</quote>.</text>
 </paragraph></subsection><subsection id="HD5A9323FB5E7453882105706CBF3DFC7"><enum>(b)</enum><header>First responder defined</header><text>Such subsection is further amended—</text> <paragraph id="H723C00850B9641409791F327AE10EAFC"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in paragraph (2), by striking <quote>, United States Code; and</quote> and inserting a semicolon;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="H3085F580BA90407FB42E7A7D4C2D9129"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in paragraph (3), by striking the period at the end and inserting <quote>; and</quote>; and</text> </paragraph><paragraph id="H87DB6BCA21754E56BA115D2459BE57A5"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following new paragraph:</text>

 <paragraph id="HE7A333A3E8984A709B9B905CF0C4F9AE"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the term <term>first responder</term> means a <term>public safety officer</term> as defined in section 1204 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/3796b">42 U.S.C. 3796b</external-xref>).</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
 </paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H2FBCFC38F01D408C8E0810BCF3D9D417"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by this Act shall apply with respect to deaths of first responders occurring on or after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text>
