			 pursue independent study programs at certain educational institutions that
			 are not institutions of higher learning, and for other purposes.</official-title>

 <section id="id50721EC6E53440CF82F672B72FB59BB4" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Veterans Education Improvement Act of 2017</short-title></quote>.</text> </section><section id="id1700D4B997264488B116B33B844FE516" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Authorization for use of Post-9/11 Educational Assistance to pursue independent study programs at certain educational institutions that are not institutions of higher learning</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Paragraph (4) of section 3680A(a) of title 38, United States Code, is amended to read as follows:</text>
			<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idF6E8A746FF694AC586FABE6B4E9FBBE6" style="OLC">
 <paragraph id="id196d9d3bb8394648bf38dffebec47633"><enum>(4)</enum><text>any independent study program except—</text> <subparagraph id="idF73C17BF5E834AD1865FBEC2442AF82A"><enum>(A)</enum><text>with respect to enrollments occurring during the period beginning on the date of the enactment of the <short-title>Veterans Education Improvement Act of 2017</short-title> and ending on September 30, 2018, an independent study program (including open circuit television) that—</text>
 <clause id="id0DCA81D3B2EB4475B621BF5ECDE433A3"><enum>(i)</enum><text>is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; and</text> </clause><clause id="idE0D65693FFE440D4A0B09BD899D83F15"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>leads—</text>
 <subclause id="id21470B8277A84C37971C9768F775C335"><enum>(I)</enum><text>to a standard college degree;</text> </subclause><subclause id="idDDD23F72EC3B42E497B571133667B57A"><enum>(II)</enum><text>to a certificate that reflects educational attainment offered by an institution of higher learning; or</text>
 </subclause><subclause id="idDD0DD95F1BF94170A4D43961B0848518"><enum>(III)</enum><text>to a certificate that reflects completion of a course of study offered by—</text> <item id="id1E525A8239254FDE956205B440A2EBD7"><enum>(aa)</enum><text>an area career and technical education school (as defined in subparagraphs (C) and (D) of section 3(3) of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/2302">20 U.S.C. 2302(3)</external-xref>)) that provides education at the postsecondary level; or</text>
 </item><item id="idB66705D19665448183FC16561C729796"><enum>(bb)</enum><text>a postsecondary vocational institution (as defined in section 102(c) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1002">20 U.S.C. 1002(c)</external-xref>)) that provides education at the postsecondary level; and</text>
 </item></subclause></clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id7CE7BC1B5C1B418B9D600AA5715F5F0D"><enum>(B)</enum><text>with respect to enrollments occurring during any period other than the period described in subparagraph (A), an accredited independent study program (including open circuit television) leading—</text>
 <clause id="id84FE08A2576B445394C6CB3B84F09E2A"><enum>(i)</enum><text>to a standard college degree; or</text> </clause><clause id="id2D729A57583A4AF38465E781B37D474C"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>to a certificate that reflects educational attainment offered by an institution of higher learning.</text></clause></subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
