A BILL
To amend the National and Community Service Act of 1990 to clarify that
an individual may receive certain benefits for more than 4 terms of
service for compelling reasons.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This Act may be cited as the ``Term Extension for AmeriCorps
Members Act''.
SEC. 2. WAIVERS.
Section 139(b) of the National and Community Service Act of 1990
(42 U.S.C. 12593(b)) is amended by adding at the end the following:
``(5) Waivers for compelling purposes.--
``(A) Extension.--A State Commission on National
and Community Service for the State in which a national
service program is being carried out may authorize, for
compelling circumstances, an individual in an approved
national service position may continue a service for
more than 4 terms.
``(B) Benefits.--An individual performing service
under this paragraph may continue to receive a living
allowance and other benefits under section 12594 of
this title but may not receive an additional national
service educational award under section 12595 of this
title.''.
