A BILL
To direct the Secretary of Labor to promulgate an occupational safety
and health standard on reducing the threat of violence in the
workplace, and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This Act may be cited as the ``Safe Workplaces Act''.
SEC. 2. OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARD ON REDUCING THE THREAT
OF VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE.
(a) Study.--The Director of the National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health shall conduct a study on reducing the threat of
violence in the workplace, including the threat of firearm violence.
(b) Report.--Not later than 15 months after the date of the
enactment of this Act, the Director shall submit to the Secretary of
Labor, the Committee on Education and Labor of the House of
Representatives, and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and
Pensions of the Senate a report on the results of the study conducted
under subsection (a), which shall include recommendations that the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration shall consider when
promulgating an occupational safety and health standard on reducing the
threat of violence in the workplace.
(c) Occupational Safety and Health Standard.--
(1) In general.--Not later than 4 years after the date of
enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Labor shall, pursuant
to section 6(b) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of
1970 (29 U.S.C. 655(b)), promulgate an occupational safety and
health standard on reducing the threat of violence in the
workplace, including the threat of firearm violence.
(2) Consideration.--In promulgating the standard required
under paragraph (1), the Secretary shall consider the
recommendations included in the report required under
subsection (b).
