To authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants 
to States to develop, improve, or maintain a State registry of advance 
                              directives.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the 
United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

    This Act may be cited as the ``State Registries for Advance 
Directives Act of 2022''.

SEC. 2. GRANTS FOR STATE REGISTRIES OF ADVANCE DIRECTIVES.

    (a) In General.--The Secretary of Health and Human Services may 
award grants to States to develop, improve, or maintain, directly or by 
contract, a State registry of advance directives.
    (b) Authorization of Appropriations.--To carry out this section, 
there is authorized to be appropriated $5,000,000 for the period of 
fiscal years 2023 through 2027.
