A BILL
To authorize the Secretary of Transportation to extend the duration of
certain waivers for school bus drivers, and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This Act may be cited as the ``Get Our Kids to School Act of
2022''.
SEC. 2. WAIVERS FOR SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS.
(a) Extended Waiver Period.--In the case of a covered waiver, the
period specified in section 31315(a)(1) of title 49, United States
Code, shall be treated as a period not in excess of 1 year.
(b) Public Comments on Further Extension of Waiver.--Not later than
120 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall
solicit public comments on the feasibility and potential benefits of
granting a covered waiver of unlimited duration.
(c) Availability of Funding.--Notwithstanding any other provision
of law, funds made available to a State under section 31313 of title
49, United States Code, may be used by the State to assist with costs
associated with a covered waiver.
(d) Covered Waiver Defined.--In this section, the term ``covered
waiver'' means a waiver that grants to States the discretion to waive
the engine compartment component of the pre-trip vehicle inspection
skills requirement described in section 383.113(a)(1)(i) of title 49,
Code of Federal Regulations, for a commercial driver's license
applicant seeking to operate a school bus.
