A BILL
To require the Secretary of the Army to acquire technology that uses
acoustic sound to deter pinniped predators at such Dam, and for other
purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.
This Act may be cited as the ``Pinniped Predator Deterrence Act''.
SEC. 2. SET ASIDE FOR PINNIPED PREDATOR DETERRENCE TECHNOLOGY.
(a) In General.--The Secretary shall--
(1) acquire technology that uses targeted acoustic sound to
deter pinniped predators above and below the Bonneville Dam;
and
(2) place such technology at the Bonneville Dam to prevent
the recolonization of pinniped predators.
(b) Prohibition on Certain Technology.--In carrying out this
section, the Secretary may not acquire technology under this section
that uses underwater firecrackers or any similar method of deterrence.
(c) Authorization of Appropriations.--There is authorized to be
appropriated to carry out this section $400,000.
(d) Definitions.--In this section:
(1) Bonneville dam.--The term ``Bonneville Dam'' means the
Bonneville Dam, Columbia River, Oregon, as authorized by the
first section of the Act of August 30, 1935 (chapter 831, 49
Stat. 1038) and the first section and section 2(a) of the Act
of August 20, 1937 (16 U.S.C. 832, 832a(a)).
(2) Secretary.--The term ``Secretary'' means the Secretary
of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers.
