RESOLUTION
Expressing deepest condolences for the lives lost and unwavering
solidarity with the Republic of Turkiye, and the Turkish and Syrian
people, following the destructive earthquake on February 6, 2023.
Whereas, on February 6, 2023, the Turkish cities of Malatya, Kahramanmaras,
Adana, Ad(yaman, Diyarbak(r, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Sanl(urfa, Hatay, and
Kilis, and the Syrian cities of Aleppo, Afrin, and Azaz, were devastated
by 2 massive 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes, which took the lives of
thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands of people;
Whereas many aftershocks, some as potent as 6.6 magnitude, have been recorded
since the initial earthquake;
Whereas the number of people who have lost their lives has exceeded 12,000 and
increasing;
Whereas the number of people who have been injured has exceeded 22,000 and
increasing;
Whereas the brave men and women of North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally
Turkiye have passionately and painstakingly been participating in the
rescue efforts for days; and
Whereas the Republic of Turkiye has declared a state of emergency in the region
for 3 months, and a national mourning for 7 days:
Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) expresses deepest condolences to the families who have
lost loved ones, and wishes a speedy recovery for the injured
in Turkiye and the region;
(2) encourages and commends the hard work put out by the
brave men and women of North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO) ally Turkiye and nongovernmental organizations working
on the ground while conducting search and rescue missions in
the cities impacted by the earthquakes;
(3) conveys its committed and unwavering solidarity with
the Republic of Turkiye and the Turkish and Syrian people
following the devastating disasters; and
(4) urges the Biden Administration to provide immediate
assistance to the NATO ally Turkiye and the region.
