RESOLUTION
Providing the sense of the House of Representatives that the attempted
assassination of former President Donald J. Trump was an abhorrent act
of cowardice that must be universally condemned and that the only
appropriate place for the Nation to settle political disputes is at the
ballot box on election day.
Whereas former President Donald J. Trump hosted a campaign rally in Butler,
Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024;
Whereas, in the middle of remarks, former President Trump turned his head and
was shot in the ear by an assailant attempting to end Trump's life;
Whereas the assailant murdered Corey Comperatore, a courageous father of 2,
husband, and pillar of his community who sacrificed his life so his
family could keep theirs;
Whereas political violence, in all of its manifestations and from any political
persuasion, must be condemned;
Whereas, prior to the attempted assassination of former President Trump, many
Democrats often recklessly referred to the 45th President as a
``dictator'', even comparing him to the profoundly wicked mass murderer
Adolf Hitler;
Whereas President Joe Biden had mentioned a week earlier that it was ``time to
put Trump in a bulls-eye'', and has repeatedly referred to former
President Trump and his supporters as ``an existential threat'' to
United States democracy, arguing ``we cannot let Trump win'';
Whereas the responsibility for the attempted assassination is squarely with the
assailant;
Whereas several members of the Democratic Party, including Joe Biden, have
nevertheless utilized inflammatory language to justify violence against
Donald Trump, including by saying (of Trump): ``If we were in high
school, I'd take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him'';
Whereas a call to civility and a ``lowering of the temperature'' should begin
with the incumbent President's own personal example;
Whereas the unprecedented animosity toward former President Trump was once again
demonstrated by the introduction of H.R. 8081, the DISGRACED Former
Protectees Act, which aimed to take away Trump's Secret Service detail;
and
Whereas such legislation was intended to fetishize violence and placate the
worst impulses of a hyperpartisan political constituency, and should be
dismissed out of hand: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that
the--
(1) attempted assassination of former President Donald J.
Trump was an abhorrent act of cowardice that must be
universally condemned; and
(2) only appropriate place for the Nation to settle
political disputes is at the ballot box on election day.
