RESOLUTION
Expressing support for the designation of August 3, 2023, as ``Tony
Bennett Day''.
Whereas Tony Bennett, born Anthony Dominick Benedetto on August 3, 1926, was an
iconic American singer, performer, and artist, who has made significant
contributions to the world of music and entertainment throughout his
illustrious career;
Whereas Tony Bennett's unparalleled talent, exceptional vocal range, and soulful
renditions of timeless classics have touched the hearts of millions of
people around the globe, leaving an indelible mark on the American
cultural landscape;
Whereas Tony Bennett's dedication to his craft, tireless pursuit of excellence,
and unwavering commitment to preserving the Great American Songbook have
earned him numerous accolades, including 20 Grammy Awards, a Kennedy
Center Honor, and the distinction of being a National Endowment for the
Arts Jazz Master;
Whereas Tony Bennett's musical legacy has not only enriched the lives of his
fans, but also served as an inspiration to countless aspiring artists,
encouraging them to pursue their dreams and strive for greatness;
Whereas Tony Bennett's philanthropic efforts, including his support for arts
education and humanitarian causes, have exemplified his compassionate
spirit and commitment to making the world a better place;
Whereas Tony Bennett was a native son of Astoria, Queens, a community that was
always close to his heart, and where he helped found the Frank Sinatra
High School of the Arts in the neighborhood;
Whereas Tony Bennett's devotion to his country was evident throughout his
service in the United States Army, as he fought in the Battle of Bulge
and his involvement in liberating a concentration camp in Germany during
World War II, and where he also played a vital role in bringing joy and
comfort to his fellow soldiers through his musical talents;
Whereas Tony Bennett was a lifelong champion of civil rights, using his music
and his platform to speak out vociferously against racism and
discrimination;
Whereas Tony Bennett and Harry Belafonte even marched together in the historic
Selma to Montgomery marches, standing alongside Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr., to demand equality and justice for all;
Whereas Tony Bennett used his influence for good, to help promote Black artists
in the music industry and to raise awareness of racial inequality; and
Whereas the designation of August 3, 2023, as ``Tony Bennett Day'' will
commemorate the birth of this legendary artist, and celebrate his
extraordinary life and the impact he has had on the United States and
the world: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) supports the designation of ``Tony Bennett Day'' across
the country, urging all citizens to join together in honoring
this extraordinary man and the tremendous contributions he has
made to the arts and society at large; and
(2) calls upon educational institutions, community
organizations, and the people of the United States to
participate in events and activities that celebrate Tony
Bennett's music, career, and philanthropy, fostering a deeper
appreciation for the arts and the role they play in enriching
our lives.
