RESOLUTION
Congratulating the Las Vegas Aces for winning the 2023 Women's National
Basketball Association Finals.
Whereas, on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, the Las Vegas Aces defeated the New
York Liberty 70 to 69 in Game 4 of the Women's National Basketball
Association (WNBA) Finals, winning the WNBA Finals 3 games to 1;
Whereas the Aces not only secured the first major professional sports
championship in the history of Las Vegas, but are the first team in
Southern Nevada to win two championships;
Whereas the Aces showed great resolve, overcoming tremendous adversity and
multiple injuries on their way to their second title in as many years;
Whereas the Aces became the first WNBA team to win consecutive championships in
21 years;
Whereas, on the way to winning the 2023 WNBA Finals, the Aces defeated:
(1) the Chicago Sky in the first round;
(2) the Dallas Wings in the Semifinals; and
(3) the New York Liberty in the WNBA Finals.
Whereas every member of the 2023 Aces contributed to this championship season,
including: Kierstan Bell, Alysha Clark, Alaina Coates, Sydney Colson,
Cayla George, Chelsea Gray, Candace Parker, Kelsey Plum, Kiah Stokes,
Riquna Williams, A'ja Wilson, and Jackie Young;
Whereas owner Mark Davis, President Nikki Fargas, and Head Coach Becky Hammon
have created a championship organization comprised of accomplished
coaches and world-class athletes;
Whereas Head Coach Becky Hammon became the third coach in either NBA or WNBA
history to win two championships in her first two seasons;
Whereas the Aces constructed the first practice facility specifically built for
a WNBA team in league history, a state-of-the-art campus in Henderson,
Nevada;
Whereas the Aces dominated in the regular season, establishing a new league
record for wins, finishing 34-6 overall, and clinching first seed in the
playoffs;
Whereas the Aces went 19-1 at home in the regular season and undefeated at home
in the postseason, drawing record crowds through the regular season and
playoffs;
Whereas the Aces led the league in points per game and field goal percentage in
the regular season;
Whereas Aces players A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and Kelsey Plum
represented the Aces at the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas;
Whereas A'ja Wilson secured the following honors this season: WNBA All-Star Game
team captain, Finals Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year,
All-Defensive First Team, and All-WNBA First Team;
Whereas Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray were honored as members of the All-WNBA
Second Team;
Whereas in the championship-clinching game, A'ja Wilson led the way with 24
points and 16 rebounds, Jackie Young added 16 points and seven assists,
and the Aces never trailed in the fourth quarter; and
Whereas the Las Vegas Aces firmly established Las Vegas as the Sports Capital of
the World: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives congratulates and
honors the Las Vegas Aces on their 2023 Women's National Basketball
Association Finals victory.
