Whereas, on October 27, 2018, members of the Tree of Life, Dor Hadash, and New Light Jewish congregations gathered for Shabbat services at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Whereas a gunman entered the synagogue and opened fire on the congregants, killing 11 people and injuring 7 others, including 5 responding police officers; Whereas the gunman yelled hateful, antisemitic remarks during the attack and was motivated by the White supremacist ``great replacement'' conspiracy theory; Whereas the ``great replacement'' conspiracy theory promoted by White supremacists and antisemites falsely asserts there is an active, ongoing, and covert effort to replace White populations in current White-majority countries; Whereas the shooting is the deadliest antisemitic attack in United States history; Whereas, on June 16, 2023, the gunman was convicted on all 63 criminal counts against him, including counts related to hate crimes and the obstruction of the free exercise of religion; Whereas the attack took place amongst an ongoing surge in antisemitism and targeted attacks against the Jewish community across the country; Whereas in the 5 years since the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, incidences of antisemitic harassment, vandalism, and assault have continued to increase; Whereas, in 2022, the Anti-Defamation League (``ADL'') reported a total of 3,697 antisemitic incidents across the United States, an average of 10 incidences each day, and the highest level of antisemitic activity on record since ADL began tracking these incidences in 1979; Whereas, the year 2022 was the third time in the last 5 years when antisemitic incidents reached historic levels; Whereas the use of antisemitic language, conspiracy theories, and hatred has increased on social media platforms; and Whereas the rise in antisemitism is part of growing trend in hate-fueled violence against marginalized communities: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives-- (1) honors the memories of the victims who were killed in the horrific, antisemitic attack at the Tree of Life synagogue-- (A) Joyce Fienberg; (B) Richard Gottfried; (C) Rose Mallinger; (D) Jerry Rabinowitz; (E) Cecil Rosenthal; (F) David Rosenthal; (G) Bernice Simon; (H) Sylvan Simon,; (I) Daniel Stein; (J) Melvin Wax; and (K) Irving Younger; (2) expresses gratitude for the emergency response officials, medical professionals, and members of the community who came together to help save lives in the aftermath of the attack; (3) expresses continued solidarity and support to the Tree of Life, Dor Hadash, and New Light congregations, the Pittsburgh Jewish community, and the families, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragedy; (4) condemns rising antisemitism and stands with the Jewish communities in Pittsburgh, the United States, and around the world; and (5) reaffirms the commitment of the United States-- (A) to combat hate, extremism, violence, and antisemitism in all of its forms; (B) to protect the right of all people to freely exercise their religious beliefs; and (C) to ensure the safety and security of all people of the United States. <all>
