                                 A BILL


 
  To adjust the definition of service in the uniformed services with 
respect to readmission requirements for servicemembers under the Higher 
                         Education Act of 1965.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the 
United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

    This Act may be cited as the ``Servicemember Enrollment and 
Readmission for Valuable Education Act'' or the ``SERVE Act''.

SEC. 2. READMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR SERVICEMEMBERS.

    Section 484C(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 
1091c(a)) is amended to read as follows:
    ``(a) Definition of Service in the Uniformed Services.--In this 
section, the term `service in the uniformed services' means service 
(whether voluntary or involuntary) on active duty in the Armed Forces, 
including such service by a member of the National Guard or Reserve on 
active duty, active duty for training, or National Guard duty under 
State order or Federal authority.''.
