       referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources

 To require the Secretary of the Interior to repay States for amounts 
expended by States to operate units of the National Park System during 
                         a Government shutdown.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the 
United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. REPAYMENT OF STATE FUNDS USED TO OPERATE UNITS OF THE 
              NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM DURING A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN.

    (a) Definition of Government Shutdown.--In this section, the term 
``Government shutdown'' means a lapse in appropriations for 1 or more 
agencies of the Federal Government.
    (b) Repayment Required.--Not later than 30 days after the date on 
which a Government shutdown ends, on the request of a State that 
expended State funds to operate 1 or more units of the National Park 
System in the State during the Government shutdown, the Secretary of 
the Interior shall pay to that State an amount equal to the amount 
expended by the State to operate the 1 or more units of the National 
Park System in that State during the Government shutdown.
