Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE. This Act may be cited as the ``Enhancing COPS Hiring Program Grants for Local Law Enforcement Act''. SEC. 2. USE OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND COMMUNITY POLICING GRANTS. (a) Uses of Grants.--Section 1701(b) of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (34 U.S.C. 10381(b)) is amended-- (1) in paragraph (23), by striking ``; and'' and inserting the semicolon at the end; (2) in paragraph (24), by striking the period at the end and inserting ``; and''; and (3) by adding at the end the following: ``(25) to provide bonuses for the recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers or career law enforcement officers employed by a law enforcement agency experiencing a decline in recruitment of officers or a high rate of retirements or resignations.''. (b) Definitions.--Section 1709 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (34 U.S.C. 10389) is amended by adding at the end the following: ``(8) `law enforcement officer' shall have the meaning given such term in section 1204(9).''. <all>
