 benefits not later than 30 days after an item or service is furnished 
                      under the Medicare program.

    Ways and Means, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and 
Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in 
   each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the 
                jurisdiction of the committee concerned

    To amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to require the 
  Secretary of Health and Human Services to provide an explanation of 
 benefits not later than 30 days after an item or service is furnished 
                      under the Medicare program.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the 
United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

    This Act may be cited as the ``Prompt Reporting and Oversight for 
Medicare Providing Transparency Act'' or the ``PROMPT Act''.

SEC. 2. REQUIRING THE SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES TO PROVIDE 
              AN EXPLANATION OF BENEFITS NOT LATER THAN 30 DAYS AFTER 
              AN ITEM OR SERVICE IS FURNISHED UNDER THE MEDICARE 
              PROGRAM.

    Section 1806(a) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1395b-7(a)) 
is amended by inserting ``, not later than 30 days after such payment 
is made (or would have been made),'' after ``deductible)''.
