Part 1 of the amendment sought to strike language in the proposed article which specifies the people's right to "acknowledge God" and insert language which specifies the people's right to "freedom of religion". \ Part 2 of the amendment sought to strike language in the proposed article that specifies that the Government shall not "discriminate against religion, or deny equal access to a benefit on account of religion" and insert language that specifies "or otherwise compel or discriminate against religion".

Purpose:

An amendment to 1) strike language to secure the right to "acknowledge God" and insert the right to "freedom of religion," and 2) strike language dealing with the denial of "equal access to a benefit on account of religion" and insert "or otherwise compel or discriminate against religion."
