IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES June 29, 1989 Mr. MONTGOMERY (by request) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs A BILL To amend title 38 of the United States Code to permit certain eligible veterans to purchase up to $20,000 of National Service Life Insurance. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, SECTION 1. NATIONAL SERVICE LIFE INSURANCE. (a) ADDITIONAL INSURANCE- (1) Subchapter I of chapter 19 of title 38, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following new section: `Sec. 730. Additional insurance `(a) Any person insured under any policy of National Service Life Insurance shall upon application in writing, submission of evidence of good health satisfactory to the Secretary at the time of such application, and payment of the required premiums be granted additional National Service Life Insurance in an amount equal to the amount of National Service Life Insurance that person has in force on the date the person's application for the additional insurance is received by the Department of Veterans Affairs. `(b) Additional National Service Life Insurance issued under subsection (a) of this section shall be issued upon the same terms and conditions as contained in the veteran's National Service Life Insurance policy or policies in force on the date of application, except that the premium rates for the additional insurance shall be established by the Secretary to cover fully the Government's cost in providing such additional insurance.'. (2) The table of sections at the beginning of chapter 19 of such title is amended by inserting after the item relating to section 729 the following new item: `730. Additional insurance.'. (b) CONFORMING AMENDMENTS- (1) Section 703 of such title, is amended by inserting before the period at the end of the last sentence the following: `, nor to the purchase of additional insurance authorized under section 730 of this title.'. (2) Section 741 of such title is amended by inserting before the period at the end of the last sentence the following: `, nor to the purchase of additional insurance authorized under section 730 of this title.'. (c) EFFECTIVE DATE- The amendments made by this section shall take effect as of the first day of the first month beginning more than six months after the date of the enactment of this Act.
