the following joint resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Post
Office and Civil Service
JOINT RESOLUTION
Designating May 15, 1991, as `Joe DiMaggio Day'.
Whereas the month of May 1991 marks the 50th anniversary of one of Major
League Baseball's most enduring records, Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak;
Whereas Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak represented the highlight of
an extraordinary career which included Joe DiMaggio being named the most
valuable player three times and playing on the American League All Star team
on 11 separate occasions;
Whereas Joe DiMaggio compiled a lifetime .325 batting average over 1,736
games in 13 seasons with the New York Yankees;
Whereas during Joe DiMaggio's 13 years with the New York Yankees they won
10 American League pennants and nine World Series;
Whereas Joe DiMaggio was unanimously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame
in 1955; and
Whereas Joe DiMaggio, the `Yankee Clipper', remains a revered national figure
40 years after his retirement from baseball, and is a genuine immortal of
baseball who has acquired millions of fans around the world: Now, therefore,
be it
  Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States
  of America in Congress assembled, That--
  (1) May 15, 1991, is designated as `Joe DiMaggio Day', and the President
  is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people
  of the United States to celebrate such day with appropriate ceremonies and
  activities in honor of Joe DiMaggio's remarkable and lasting major league
  feat of hitting in 56 consecutive games, and
  (2) the Congress and the Nation salute Joe DiMaggio for his genuine impact
  on American society and the positive presence he represents.
