[Congressional Bills 103th Congress] [From the U.S. Government Printing Office] [S.J. Res. 123 Introduced in Senate (IS)] 103d CONGRESS 1st Session S. J. RES. 123 To designate the week beginning November 6, 1994, as ``National Elevator and Escalator Safety Awareness Week''. _______________________________________________________________________ IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES August 6 (legislative day, June 30), 1993 Mr. Shelby introduced the following joint resolution; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary _______________________________________________________________________ JOINT RESOLUTION To designate the week beginning November 6, 1994, as ``National Elevator and Escalator Safety Awareness Week''. Whereas the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates there are 14,697 injuries occurring on elevators and escalators each year; Whereas individuals in the United States suffer injury each year on elevators and escalators despite the best efforts of the industry to provide safe equipment; Whereas a majority of the individuals in the United States who suffer injury on elevators and escalators are children under the age of 10 and the elderly; Whereas most injuries can be avoided through education; and Whereas the people of the United States and especially the children and elderly must be educated on the safe and proper use of elevators and escalators for the avoidance of injury: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the week beginning November 6, 1994, is designated as ``National Elevator and Escalator Safety Awareness Week'', and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such week with appropriate ceremonies and activities. <all>
