                                 PRAYER

  Father Gary Studniewski, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Washington, 
D.C., offered the following prayer:
  Almighty God, we lift our hearts and minds to You as we begin today. 
You are sovereign over all things, but You give us all a share in Your 
governance over the things of creation and the affairs of humanity.
  Thank You for the blessing over this House of Representatives with a 
privileged position in governing toward the end of life, liberty, and 
the pursuit of happiness for the citizens it serves.
  We ask Your grace and favor upon each elected official, that unity 
among them may be realized even amidst diversity, and that their work 
contribute to the ways of justice for all and peace that is lasting.
  Bless all who work and assemble here, and fill this session with Your 
spirit, that it may result in good fruit for our country in time, and 
its citizens for eternity.
  Amen.
