                    in the house of representatives

                         Monday, April 8, 2019

Mr. SMITH of Missouri. Madam Speaker, I rise today to honor the
sesquicentennial birthday of Willow Springs, Missouri. Located in
Howell County, Willow Springs sits at the intersections of U.S. Hwy 63
and U.S. Hwy 60, making it the hub of the Ozarks.
On March 29, 1869, the Willow Springs Post Office was established.
The post office was located at the general store of Mr. James Harris, a
Union veteran of the Civil War. The town remained small until the
development of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis railroads in the
1880s. The railroad stimulated commerce and brought new businesses and
people to the area who were interested in taking part in the expansion.
It is my privilege to acknowledge this historic birthday before the
United States House of Representatives and to honor the people of
Willow Springs, Missouri as they partake in this yearlong celebration.
