IN RECOGNITION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UIC JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL

                                 ______

                           HON. DARIN LaHOOD

                              of illinois

                    in the house of representatives

                      Tuesday, September 10, 2019

Mr. LaHOOD. Madam Speaker, I rise today, along with my colleague
Representative Danny K. Davis, to recognize the establishment of
Chicago's first and only public law school, the UIC John Marshall Law
School.
In July 2018, the boards of trustees of the University of Illinois
and The John Marshall Law School voted to approve the acquisition of
The John Marshall Law School by UIC. The inaugural class matriculated
this fall.
UIC is Chicago's only public research university and one of the most
diverse universities in the nation. UIC is an integral part of
Chicago's educational, technological, and cultural fabric. The John
Marshall Law School, founded in 1899, has been a pioneer in legal
education with top-ranked programs in lawyering skills, trial advocacy,
and intellectual property. It is one of the most diverse law schools in
the country and has a long history of providing pro bono services. Both
UIC and The John Marshall Law School have track records of excellence
in research and scholarship, access for underserved students, and
service to Chicago and its people.
The acquisition provides current and prospective law students with a
more affordable legal education and enhanced student services,
including access to health care services, recreational facilities,
residence halls, and college athletics. Additionally, this acquisition
will create opportunities for interdisciplinary courses and new joint
and dual-degree programs.
The establishment of the UIC John Marshall Law School complements
other University efforts to advance innovation and opportunity in
higher education. These efforts include the recent openings of UIC's
Engineering Innovation Building and Academic and Residential Complex to
address UIC's continued growth and record enrollment gains.
As a 1996 graduate of the John Marshall Law School, I am excited to
express my support for the UIC John Marshall Law School. My colleague,
Congressman Danny K. Davis, who represents UIC, shares in this
excitement. We extend the best of luck to both institutions as they
welcome their first class.
