                    in the house of representatives

                       Monday, September 16, 2019

Mr. THOMPSON of California. Madam Speaker, I rise today to honor the
Boys and Girls Club of Greater Santa Rosa on the occasion of its 70th
Anniversary.
The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Santa Rosa opened its doors in
1949 with the generous support of local leaders who donated their time
and resources to establish a safe place for children to go during the
after-school hours. Since then, the club has provided boys and girls
with a place to learn, play, develop academic skills, and engage in
physical activity. They satisfy the age-old desire of young people to
have a ``club'' of their own. Staffed by full-time and part-time Youth
Development Professionals, and supplemented by passionate and caring
volunteers, the club is open more than 250 days per year.
One major tenet of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Santa Rosa is
diversity. They strive to reflect the makeup of our community and serve
boys and girls of all races, religions, and cultures. The programs and
activities are conducted in the warm, friendly atmosphere of facilities
specifically designed for youth. The Club is open to all members at any
time during hours of operation and offers varied and diversified
programs that recognize and respond to the collective and individual
needs of girls and boys. The Club is guidance-oriented and emphasizes
values inherent in the relationships between young people, their peers,
and adults.
Madam Speaker, for seventy years, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater
Santa Rosa has provided a safe, fun place for children to learn and
play. It is therefore fitting and proper that we honor its 70th
anniversary here today.
