                                 PRAYER

  Dr. J.D. Greear, The Summit Church, Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, 
offered the following prayer:
  Almighty Father, we ask You for Your help in guiding the affairs of 
this great Nation. We acknowledge that you have appointed governments 
for the promotion of peace, for the preservation of justice, and the 
protection of liberty. We recognize that the wisdom to accomplish these 
things comes only from You.
  May You grant that this body rule in a way that directs the men, 
women, and children of this country towards Your goodness, and enables 
them to respond in thankfulness to You, knowing that each of us must 
give an account for our decisions and our actions to You.
  May we perceive the love that You have for us, and may that translate 
into love for one another, especially the most vulnerable.
  Finally, may we recognize that all of this comes as a gift from You, 
embodied in Jesus Christ, who was punished for our sin and raised to 
life so that we could find new life in Him.
  It is in His name that I pray.
  Amen.
