                        Friday, October 11, 2019

Mrs. DINGELL. Madam Speaker, I rise today to celebrate the 110th
anniversary of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM). The Mission's
years of service to Detroit are worthy of commendation.
On February 14, 1909, the Detroit Rescue Mission was founded by David
C. Stucky. The Mission began as a soup kitchen in an old poultry store,
offering food, clothing, shelter, and church services to Detroit's
homeless. As the years passed, the Mission evolved to meet the changing
needs of the inner city and provide support to even more groups of
disadvantaged people. As it grew, it began to offer new services like
substance abuse treatments, educational courses, and job preparation
training to help rebuild lives destroyed by poverty, homelessness, and
addiction.
Since its inception, the Mission has remained fully committed to
supporting people across Detroit. Even during the trying years of the
Great Depression, DRMM volunteers sacrificed food from their own
personal shelves to ensure families would not be left to starve.
Decades later, DRMM still continues its selfless mission and truly has
become an invaluable resource to many in our community. From offering
medical treatments to low-income mothers and their children to
providing permanent housing solutions to our nation's veterans, DRMM
has proven an overwhelming and lasting commitment to Detroit. I am
grateful for its dedicated efforts to provide hope to hopeless, abused,
and disadvantaged members of our community.
Madam Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me in celebrating the
110th anniversary of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. We deeply
appreciate DRMM's 110 years of remarkable service and wish the
organization continued success in the decades ahead.
