           MEASURES PLACED ON THE CALENDAR--S. 617 and H.R. 8

Mr. McCONNELL. Mr. President, I understand there are two bills at the
desk due for a second reading en bloc.
The PRESIDING OFFICER. The clerk will read the titles of the bills
for the second time.
The bill clerk read as follows:

A bill (S. 617) to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986
to extend certain expiring provisions, to provide disaster
tax relief, and for other purposes.
A bill (H.R. 8) to require a background check for every
     firearm sale.

Mr. McCONNELL. In order to place the bills on the calendar under the
provisions of rule XIV, I would object to further proceedings en bloc.
The PRESIDING OFFICER. Objection having been heard, the bills will be
placed on the calendar.
